Day 16, October 27
Partway Northcliffe to partway Walpole
Pretty bloody chilly start to the day and we hoped the rain would hold off – rain did however the hail pelted down 5 minutes into the day when Terry Alderman joined us. He probably wished he’d picked a different day to walk!
Once again the scenery was spectacular (after hail) – moving from Karri trees to pine forests and back to Karris.
What can we say about the rest of the day except it was cold, actually freezing, no make that f’ing freezing and it hailed 5 times.
A sample o our day’s walk – 1 ½ hours from about 9.00am then a 5 minute break the crew supplied soup for this), followed by a 1 hour walk and 5 minute break another hour and a 5 minute break – ½ hour for lunch, 1hr, 5 min, 1 hr, 5 min at approx 6km per hour and covering 32 kms!
Lunch spot is partly determined by mileage and partly by a safe and protected place to park. 1 hour breaks are also determined this way. A one hour walk sometimes might have us finishing on a corner or hilltop so we must continue walking until it is safe to stop.
Our guest walkers today included Terry Alderman, Paul Bennett of Cadbury Shweppes (who have supplied us with the lollies for our walks) and Hazel Love, wife of Pat Love a race caller/announcer.
In addition to this we had a new driver join us today – and thank God because our support crew numbers were running a little low. Daryl Green of Ray White Special Projects will spend the next week with us and provided some welcome relief in the music arena.
Kerro’s Medal of Courage went to Julie for her assistance in the support arena and even cleaning up after lunch in the rain and hail.
The Downlow was close however Sarah won just marginally from Ross who left Julie at the pub in Northcliffe – so she missed out on a shower before the evening’s event.
The night’s event at the Northcliffe Hotel was great. Steve and Kathy McGavin, mine hosts, did absolutely everything possible to assist us with catering, washing and an enormous amount of little extras. Thank you so much – you were superb.
The night was capped off with a great auction and a couple of race calls. Pat Love was fantastic and his two calls raised $655 for the cause. The Crusaders were all given nicknames and we had to bet on the winner.
