Day 18, October 29
Near Walpole to 18kms past Walpole
Enthusiastic Crusaders set off from fabulous Rest Point Holiday Park minus Terry Alderman who walked very uncomfortably over the past few days.
Self catered breakfast in our own cabins and then bus trip to our starting point just out of town. We have started leaving a tell tale stick propped up against a large tree to quickly identify which tree we finished by (& Judgy has taken to leaving a small message, dated, on the tree).
Thought we’d done the hills after Nannup – however experienced a number of hills again today. Either the hills are getting smaller or we are getting fitter.’ What hill – that’s just a small incline’.
Rating for today’s hills – 3,
Nannup 1 &
Pemberton just before lunch 2.
Drizzly rain for much of the day, but also humid. Raincoats on, raincoats off, raincoats on…….
Fabulous fresh rolls for lunch (after welcome soup in thermoses for morning tea – ladies you are amazing) at Redmons Riverside Retreat. Check it out for future accommodation/holiday. We have been truly blessed by the generosity of people we have encountered along the way by either free accommodation, wholesale price for food, donations of food, wine ( which has especially kept Karen happy – is that hard to do? No, unless the wine’s off!), fruit and money.
New foot photos required today as numerous prophylactics (toe condoms, padding, tape & strapping) needed. Quiz question could be proposed – How many condoms were used over the course of the trip? (all on the feet of course!! – too tired for anything else anyway.)
Celebratory bus trip home today, everyone is high spirits as less than 100kms to go. A few ‘roadies’ at the end of each day’s walk seems to quickly soothe away the various aches & pains - & a silent cheer to Kerro who inspired this journey.
Evening meal at the Walpole Hotel.
Thanks to Norm from Greenbushes who has chased us around the countryside these past few days to provide welcome massages. Norm’s mum died from MND.
Honorable mentions for Downlow Award:
- Harry for forgetting to put any beer on ice
- Harry for losing his dinner to the Kookaburras
- Cliff for poor timing
- Ross – new member of the van driver’s association when not walking – for needing a massage to drive!
- Paul (“I’ll have what he’s having” Chocolate Benno) for his fashion statement in green garbage bag
- Hoops for setting one of the cars alarms off in the wee small hours & waking up half the camp site
- Karen & Julie – for their rather suspect control of a yellow wheelie bin loaded with firewood
- Judgy – for forgetting to take the ice pack off his ankle after lunch and walking with it still strapped on
Winner: Annette for leaving her G-string behind somewhere and it being found inside a stubbie holder in the back seat of one of the vehicles
Kerro’s Medal of Courage: Libby for her grit and determination as well as perseverance after suffering an injury and then making a comeback
