Day Two, October 13
Rockingham – Mandurah
Early morning podiatry sessions supplied by the delightful and effervescent Sarah Clarke (who flew from Geelong on a voluntary basis to assist us) ensured the walkers wer “up and at ‘em”. A warm-up walk before breakfast loosened up any sore muscles before we set off for Mandurah around 9.00am.
Celebrity walkers for the day were the delightfully infectious Alan Border, who cheerfully signed cricket bats and shirts all day and Kim Hughes who kept us entertained with his humour and wit, and the gentleman of the walk – Ross Glendinning.
The day’s walk concluded at Jim Kidd’s in Mandurah with well earned cold drinks and a sausage sizzle after the extremely warm day. Once again Alan and Kim were swarmed by the local children wanting sporting memorabilia signed. Cameras clicked incessantly.
Cool down for the day was poolside at the Mandurah Holiday Village where some holiday makers couldn’t believe their eyes seeing floating toe condoms in the spa and then the ability to chat and have their photos taken with Kim, Allan and Ross. They willingly donated to the cause.
Dinner was held at the Stage Door Restaurant in the Marina where some corporate guests, including John Ditchburn, enjoyed the company of the sporting celebrities.
Other guests in the restaurant willing donated to the cause also – several ‘Dads” were delighted to make the most of the opportunity for bat signing by Alan and Kim and jumper signing by Ross.
The Kerry Coates Medallion was presented to Sarah Clarke, the podiatrist, for keeping us on our feet!
The Downlow medal was awarded to Alan Morrison, of Heroes and Legends and our resident Auctioneer and co-ordinator of sporting memorabilia for his impression of a “Swinging Pig” on the electric gate!
