Day 20, October 31
Outside Denmark to partway to Albany (28kms)
Usual early morning start after podiatry appointments with Sarah – mostly flat roads again today. Newest roadie Daryl Green from Ray White Special Projects has taken over the lead car. We now have a dancing car and dreadful singing to accompany us. The music’s great though. Ross has needed to wear earplugs when driving as the music is too loud for his delicate ears. Daryl seems to relish his new role.
Our support crew including Warren (Little Tom), Dick (Big Dick) and Harry (with cries of “Dong” or “Boofhead” as he throbs past in Ross’s Ford 250 – shades of the movie “Duel”), Dazzling Daryl, Mick Pember – who was given the task of driving the transit van when he could barely reach the pedals and had to stick half his body out of the van’s windows to signal drivers past), Cath and Julie (when not walking) feeding the masses, dreaming up new treats for us and attending to volumes of dirty laundry, Maureen (Dick’s wife), Coral Pember, Hilly, Sarah, Piglet, Hoops as well as Alan Morrision and Rod Loader have all made this possible.
Sporting legends along the way have in a huge way assisted us to raise significant funds as well as constantly entertain us on the road– for this we applaud their generosity of time and effort.
This journey has been both a journey for Kerro as well as a personal journey for all – Crusaders if that’s what you call the walkers and crew for want of a better term for all the non-walkers on any given day. A few (although not many) walkers, through injury or ill health have not been able to walk the whole 700 odd kms. They have then embraced whatever task is required of them each with enthusiasm, whether driving, preparing meals or doing our laundry. Everyone’s contribution or role is as important as the other.
The ‘flu’ has gripped a few members from time to time (thanks Piglet for sharing) but this has still not slowed them up from fronting up day after day to keep the ‘walkers’ on the road. I think we should have considered a pharmaceutical sponsor as well.
After Norm’s departure, amazingly we were provided with further massage & Bowen therapy from Judy & Elizabeth from Albany. They also have been touched personally by MND.
Tim Bowers from Bankwest has been another who has proved outstanding support – meeting us at various Bankwest locations throughout the Southwest. He has arranged for his staff to provide refreshments at day’s end when we arrive at Bankwest. This started our as simply a sausage sizzle, however has progressed to fresh fruit platters and cheese & bikkies when Tim realised that this may be better placed in our diet after walking 30 odd kms days after day. Excellent wine on offer at Denmark also J. No matter what has been proved, we are truly grateful and also acknowledge police indulgence when a couple of celebratory drinks have taken place outside these banks. Police has also made personal donations – so thank you.
Recovery at the beach at Denmark – a brave few actually went for a swim instead of just standing about thigh deep. Sensational water.
Enormous support in Denmark at function arranged by Kim Barrow of Ray White Denmark and Shire President of Denmark.
80 paying guests were treated to fabulous meal, then panel with Ken Judge, Ross Glendinning and Shelley Taylor-Smith. A lively auction raised over $3500 following another Phantom race call. (Annette’s Choice won by a half dick, marginally better than in Northcliffe where she lost by a half nipple!)
