Day 3, October 14
Mandurah to Pinjarra
We partook of a self catered breakfast at our leisure over the “Sunday Times” before being transported back to Jim Kidd’s store where Shaun McManus and many of Kerro’s family and friends joined us for the day. Shaun was great company along with Allan and Kim and we had a beautiful lunch prepared for us by Cath Anderson, one of our support crew, on the roadside in Ravenswood.
In Pinjarra we were met by a gathering at the Community Centre where a sausage sizzle was held. Sausages were donated by the local butcher – which amongst other things makes Pinjarra a great place to stop for. The proceeds of the sausage sizzle were donated to the K.C.
By this time though, Alan Border and Kim Hughes had returned with some of our walkers to Centro Mandurah to “rattle tins”.
The finish point for the day was the Pinjarra Trotting Club. A team meeting and recoverey session poolside at the Mandurah Holiday Village occurred before a great evening fundraised at the Peel Ale House.
The support from locals and the Peel Ale House along with the amazing contribution by Apex volunteers led to a successful conclusion of the day.
One of the truly astounding facts about this walk is that it has drawn a myriad of people to support us. The recipient of the Kerry Coates Medal of Honour on this occasion was Greg Hill. “Hilly” jumps in and out of our support vehicles all day ferrying water, lollies, magnesium drinks and water to the walkers every kilometer or so. When he’s not doing that he’s motivating those at the back of the pack or walking. Greg’s real job is as a flight attendant and trainer with Qantas. Gee we hope we get him on one of our flights! A great guy!
On a lower note – the Downlow Medal presented on this occasion to Ken Judge. Ken lost his jacket and vowed that it was “knicked”. In the meantime Annette Judge lost her jacket – and guess where it was located? In Ken’s bag! – and Ken’s wasn’t too far away
