Day 5, October 16
Waroona – Harvey
After being teated to a fabulous breakfast courtesy of Drakesbrook Hotel we set off for Harvey.
Brian Brajkovich gave us the “harry Butler” commentary along the way pointing out a large white ibis rookery where hundred of birds were nesting, pairs of red tailed black cockatoos, a nesting hole in a tree with a pink and grey galah and a reed warbler and a blue jay in some roadside reeds.
Walk sections were chunked down into hourly lots – walk one hour, break 5 minutes. This helped a few footsore soldiers get through the day.
Paul Wilson joined us today and said he felt like he’d bowled 35 overs by day’s end!
Hspitality was provided at the Harvey Hotel by the Fletcher family – a delightfully restored 100 year old country pub. Some crew were accommodated at the nearby Wagon Wheels Motel.
The evening’s entertainment provided by Ken Judge’s panel of Steve Malaxos, Paul Wilson. Peer German fielded a number of questions relating to drugs in sport.
A lively auction followed – raising around 43,000. It was wonderful to see Michelle Rumsley donate a number of items to be auctioned. Michelle’s Mum has MND and is currently in Harvey Hospital. Ken Judge, Paul Wilson, Steve Malaxos, Peter German and Ross Whiteman called into the hospital to visit her.
Crew and walkers joined with locals to outbid each other on several items.
Stumps completed after a “State of Origin” game of pool between Ken Judge and Cliff Anderson (WA) and Rod Loader and Alan Morrison (VIC). NEEDLESS TO SAY W.A. WON!!
The Kerro’s Crusade Medal of honour was awarded to Karen Smart for her relentless energy and drive with the team. Up at 5.00am every morning for the first podiatry appointment and setting the pace for the walkers on occasion and then concluding the evening as “spotter” and scribe for the auctions has seen her labeled “Little Miss Busy”! Well done Karen we just wonder if all that red wine is acting as a performance enhancer. Random drug testing may be warranted.
The Downlow Medal was presented to Harry Marques after being nominated every day so far for various misdemeanors he was probably lucky that he only received it for acting as a pseudo-masseuse!
