Day 6, October 17
Harvey - Bunbury
Breakfast was supplied by our hospitable hosts – the Fletchers before we set off in cool and windy conditions. Rain clouds threatened early and finally the clouds opened up mid morning. Walkers scurried for wet weather gear and pressed on.
Cath and Dick had mission almost impossible to locate a dry place for lunch since it was teeming down. As luck would have it (or perhaps Kerro was working upstairs directing traffic) they came across a Community Hall in Roelands with a large patio – and the locals were only too happy to oblige. At least we had lunch out of the rain!
We’ve been averaging around 6km/hr walking most of the time, although Judgey and Karen seem to have power surges at the end of the day. Think Judgey can smell the VB and Karen the local red!
Judgey set off on a butt burning pace after lunch out of Roelands; that blew a couple of walkers off the road – with enormous road trains also doing their best too!
“Never Give up” is the motto for MND and certainly the walkers adhered to the creed today. Most bodies by now are screaming with pain one way or another; the podiatrist Sarah Clarke and massage therapist Glen Turnbull getting us through but mental toughness and determination are certainly apparent.
Celebrity and guest walkers today – Steve Malaxos, Brian Brajkovich and Brian Morris from Geographe Ford Busselton. Brian has cheerfully waved at passing cars and trucks on the days he has walked and then put on his APEX hat in the evening to assist with raffles.
A warm welcome by the City of Bunbury followed by a reception presentation by BankWest. Russell Stokes from BankWest re-joined us on the outskirts of Bunbury with the Big Orange BankWest Radio Van.
Evening function at the Rose Hotel where Ken Judge and Wayne Clark fielded a variety of questions on drugs in sport before Wayne gave us some insight into his career as well as the challenge of attracting potentially successful young athletes to cricket versus football.
Kerro’s medal of courage – today everyone was potentially a winner as a great deal of courage displayed by all. Stand out performance by Rod Cronan. Cliff Anderson deservedly won for his grit and dogged determination and “never give up” attitude in memory of Kerro.
We walkers when challenged each day just remember that at least we can walk, said Cliff.
The Donlow Award went to Greg Hill for his attempt to open the cover on Ross’s Truck at lunchtime. Instead of releasing the elastic loops, he ripped the frame off altogether. Unfortunately this resulted in several bags of clothing being soaked through. Good one Greg
